We source carbon credits from carefully selected projects.
Our Portfolio Strategy
Project Type
We are supporters of carefully design reforestation and afforestation projects, and these are the most common. However, we seek a diversified portfolio to ensure a balanced approach to carbon sequestration, reduction and capture.
Geography
Our portfolio is currently weighted towards projects in the UK. We expect to approve more projects outside of the UK over the next year.
A few of our projects
-
Mixed Reforestation in Costa Rica
Project certification: Gold Standard
Date started: 2007
An area of 2,115 hectares of pastureland, previously used for extensive cattle ranching, has been under sustainable management, with 1,280 hectares have been successively reforested in near natural mixed forest plantations with mainly native tree species. In total, more than one million trees were planted using a variety of 17 different tree species.
-
Planting of 120,000 SRC willow in Lake District, UK .
Project certification: My Carbon Plan
Date started: 2019
120,000 willow trees were planted across a 14 hectare site across 6 fields on the southern boundary of the Lake District. The objective was to utilise land sub-standard for agriculture and grow SRC willow to be used as a biofuel.
-
Planting Biodiverse Forests in Panama
Project certification: Gold Standard
Date started: 2011
Introducing sustainable timber production while reforesting degraded pastureland with a mix of native tree species and teak. The resulting forests offer a natural habitat for native animals and plants, protect and enrich the soil, save and filter water and contribute to the mitigation of climate change. More than 7.5 million trees from 20 different native species have been planted.
Our Methodology
Our 10-step approach to selecting and monitoring carbon reduction and sequestration projects to identify and support carbon credit purchasing decisions.
Once we have completed our due diligence, carbon credits can be purchased and included in our portfolio of Certified Carbon™ Credits.
-
We work directly with project operators and review the main registries to identify potential projects to support.
-
We review the project against our strategic goals to assess its suitability and ensure diversification of carbon credits across project types and geographies.
-
We review the information provided by verification and certification bodies to determine the validity of the project and its likelihood of success.
-
Where available, we will review additional reports and analysis prepared by the emerging carbon credit rating agencies.
-
We will undertake our own primary and investigative research to determine the nature of the project operators and the scheme.
-
We aim to talk directly with the project operators and complete a due diligence questionnaire for each project.
-
We identify and review any academic reports or studies which have been published, to assess the nature of the carbon reduction or sequestration calculations and claims.
-
We aim to physically visit each project. For projects further afield, this may not be financially viable or possible at the outset, but we cap the amount of carbon credits purchased at each project until we, or an associate, has been able to physically visit the project site.
-
We bring together the various work streams to create a summary to support any carbon credit purchase decision.
-
Our work doesn’t end once we have acquired carbon credits. We continue to monitor the projects to seek to understand their levels of success, and iterate our learnings into future carbon credit purchases.
How it Works
We acquire Carbon Credits from project operators, either directly or via registry marketplaces, but always in our name: Certified Carbon Ltd. We call these Underlying Carbon Credits (UCC). We then retire these carbon credits.
Our customers acquire Voluntary Carbon Credits (VCC) issued by Certified Carbon Ltd, in a strict 1-for-1 ratio: 1 VCC for every 1 UCC. The VCCs are not transferable and can only be used for the purposes of offsetting the purchasers footprint. They do not provide the the purchaser with any rights relating to the underlying projects.
Please refer to our full Terms and Conditions or contact us should you have any questions, we would be happy to talk: contact@certifiedcarbon.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
It can be difficult to know how to start, but we believe that ‘perfect shouldn’t get in the way of good’. It’s better to create an estimate of your carbon footprint now, and start to reduce and offset your carbon footprint today, instead of waiting for tomorrow.
-
A certified carbon credit allows you to offset your carbon footprint. To become carbon neutral you can purchase a tonne of CO2e to offset every tonne of CO2e you produce.
-
There are lots of online tools and data sets to help you create an estimate of your carbon footprint. Head over to our calculation page to get started.
-
At the moment, we only certify with companies and organisations, but private individuals are welcome to buy Certified Carbon Credits too.
-
Yes. All companies that offset with Certified Carbon get a certificate, a digital badge and a place on our Certified Carbon Registry.
-
Carbon net zero: you have undertaken actions to ensure your carbon footprint is zero.
Carbon neutral: you have fully offset your carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits.
Carbon offsetting can be a confusing landscape to navigate.
Don’t worry.
